Notes & Wine Advice
Serving Suggestions
Cut the warm puff pie into four wedges and serve it with crackers and fresh crudités. It works particularly well as an Appetizer, Fingerfood, or Snack. The crisp pastry and melted cheddar also make it a good addition to a High Tea or Party table.Variations
Adjust the balance of cheddar and mango chutney to make the filling more savoury or sweeter. Extra-sharp cheddar provides plenty of flavour, so a relatively thin layer is sufficient. The same basic air-fried pastry technique can also be used as inspiration for other recipes from the Pastry and Cheese collections.Storage and Reheating
Store leftover puff pie covered in the refrigerator. Reheat it briefly in the Airfryer until the filling is thoroughly heated and the pastry becomes crisp again. Avoid prolonged reheating because the cheddar can release oil and the pastry may become too dark.Wine Advice
A Chardonnay pairs well with the rich cheddar and buttery pastry while balancing the sweetness of the mango chutney. A lighter Pinot Noir is a suitable red alternative. Explore suitable wines at René’s Wijnbeleving.Nutrition values

About Cheddar Chutney Puff Pie
Cheddar Chutney Puff Pie combines crisp puff pastry, mature cheddar, and sweet mango chutney in a compact savoury pie prepared entirely in the Airfryer. The combination is uncomplicated, but the contrast between buttery pastry, salty cheese, and fruity chutney gives this small pie plenty of character.
The recipe has strong links with England, where mature cheddar, chutney, and savoury pastry are familiar partners. Mango chutney introduces a sweeter and fruitier element, while the air fryer provides a modern cooking method for a traditional-style combination.
Preparing the Puff Pastry
Store-bought puff pastry keeps preparation straightforward. Roll one sheet into a square approximately 35 cm wide, then cut out two rounds measuring about 18 cm in diameter. Keeping the pastry reasonably cool while working helps preserve its layers so they can expand during cooking.
Place the sliced cheddar in the centre of the first round, leaving enough uncovered pastry around the edge to form a secure seal. Spoon the chunky mango chutney over the cheese. Keeping the filling away from the outer edge reduces the chance of melted cheese or chutney escaping while the pie cooks.
Sealing the Puff Pie
Brush the exposed pastry edge with beaten egg before placing the second pastry round on top. The egg helps the two pieces adhere. Press the edges together with a fork to create a firm seal around the filling.
This simple construction makes the recipe useful when you want homemade-looking Pastry without preparing dough from scratch. It also creates a neat enclosed pie that can be cut into wedges after cooking.
Air Frying Until Golden
Preheat the air fryer to 165°C (325°F). Transfer the assembled pie carefully to the basket and cook it for approximately 20 minutes. The pastry should rise, develop a golden exterior, and become crisp while the cheddar inside melts into the mango chutney.
Air fryers can vary considerably, so check the pastry toward the end of the cooking time. The surface should be deeply golden rather than pale, but it should not become excessively dark before the centre is thoroughly heated.
Why Cheddar and Mango Chutney Work Together
Extra-sharp cheddar has enough savoury intensity to stand up to a sweet condiment. Mango chutney contributes fruitiness, sweetness, and acidity, preventing the filling from tasting like nothing more than melted cheese and pastry.
This balance makes the pie particularly suitable for an Appetizer or Snack. It also fits naturally into the Cheese collection because cheddar is the dominant savoury flavour.
Serving the Puff Pie
Allow the cooked pie to cool for approximately 5 minutes before cutting. This short rest gives the molten cheese time to settle and makes the pastry easier to divide cleanly into four wedges.
Serve the wedges warm with crackers and crudités as suggested in the original recipe. For entertaining, it can form part of a larger selection of Fingerfood. It is equally suitable for a relaxed Weekend snack, High Tea, or Party.
Storage and Food Safety
Because the filling contains cheese and the pastry is brushed with egg, refrigerate leftovers promptly. Keep them covered and reheat only the amount you intend to serve. The air fryer is particularly useful for reheating because it can restore some of the pastry’s crisp texture.
For current guidance on handling eggs, dairy products, cooked foods, and leftovers safely, consult the FDA food safety guidance.
Cheddar Chutney Puff Pie ultimately needs very little embellishment. Crisp pastry provides the shell, melted cheddar supplies richness, and mango chutney delivers the sweet contrast. With only a short cooking and cooling time, it is an easy addition to your collection of Airfryer recipes.
