Ingredients

  • ½ cup boiling water
  • ½ cup butter or shortening
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 egg well beaten
  • cups flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ¾ tsp. ginger
  • ¾ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. allspice

Instructions

  • Pour boiling water over the butter; add the brown sugar, honey, molasses, and egg and beat well.
  • Sift together the dry ingredients; gradually add to the molasses mixture and beat until the batter is smooth.
  • Grease an 8-inch square pan and pour the batter into the pan; bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until done.

Notes & Wine Advice

This is great served plain, but it’s even better when served slightly warm with whipped cream on top.
