Buttermilk Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup lard or vegetable shortening
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 4 cups flour
- ½ cup nuts chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Cream together sugar and shortening.
- Mix in vanilla and eggs thoroughly.
- Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk.
- Stir baking powder into flour.
- Add milk and flour mixture alternately to the creamed mixture.
- Stir in nuts.
- Refrigerate overnight or for several hours.
- Drop by teaspoonsful onto greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 400° for 8–10 minutes.
