Molasses was sometimes more available than sugar. A favorite topping for mush, it was a common ingredient in the pantry or cellar.

sour milk or buttermilk

baking soda

boiling water
Instructions
Combine molasses, egg, and milk thoroughly.
Stir in flour.
Dissolve soda in boiling water, then add to batter.
Bake in a greased and floured 8” square cake pan at 375° for 30–45 minutes.
